Acupuncture For Treatment of Pain from Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a medical condition when the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus, the endometrium, grows outside of the uterus, most commonly in the ovaries, uterine tubes, or bowel. The displaced endometrial tissue continues to follow a menstrual cycle of thickening, breaking down, and bleeding. Other tissues surrounding the displaced endometrial tissue can become irritated, eventually developing scar tissue and adhesions. Endometriosis can cause severe pelvic pain and lead to fertility problems. If you struggle with endometriosis in Kingston WA consider acupuncture as an alternative approach to finding relief.

Caring For Endometriosis In Kingston WA

One study evaluated whether acupuncture could be an effective treatment for the pain associated with endometriosis. 101 women between the ages of 20-40 participated in the study and were divided randomly into two groups. The control group received sham acupuncture while the test group received true acupuncture. Acupuncture treatments were administered twice weekly over 5 weeks. After these 5 weeks, the participants observed for 2 menstrual cycles followed by another 5 weeks of treatment with the control and test groups switching places in the type of treatment they received. Prior to the onset of the study, the patient’s pain intensity was surveyed for 2 weeks. During the study, patients recorded their pain levels on a 10-point scale. 83 out of the total 101 participants finished the study. The initial group that received true acupuncture showed a significant reduction in pain levels after the first 10 acupuncture treatments. In the second part of the study, when the control group was switched to receive true acupuncture treatment, then those participants began to report significant pain relief. The study concluded that acupuncture is an effective treatment for pain associated with endometriosis.
